Project M U S E is a process of developing an exhibit, from a concept through into a physical, 3D
exhibition space drawing on innovative, creative and practical solutions. The aim is to communicate a message through engaging audiences in meaningful & compelling interactions and experiences.
MUSE calls for a MUSEum design for an Asian artist. By fully understanding the artist, artworks, and beliefs, as well as the context of the site location, the museum accomodates a gallery, artist studio, curator's office, public workshop and a cross program - a communal space that includes a communal cafe and kitchen.
Gillman Barracks, a total of 14 herritage buildings, is Asia’s upcoming arts hub for the creation, exhibition and discussion of contemporary art.
The site is one of the 14 buildings in Gillman Barracks located within the Southern Ridges - 10 km of green, open spaces that connect various parks and nature reserves in Singapore.

Communal space helps to strengthen social identity, offer opportunities for community bonding and building inter-cultural understanding. To unite the visitors' experience along the Southern Ridges Park Trail, an outdoor communal space is introduced to draw visitors's exploration in
to the gallery in a nature setting. The indoor courtyard brings in ample natural lighting and ventilation into the site.
A lot of Jean Shin's art involves the community; hence, the Art Workshop offers a collaboration space between artisit and the public. This provides learning opportunities and art activities for the public interested in starting an art education and developing talents.
To transit to SPACE OF CELEBRATION,
visitors walk up a flight of stairs facing the outside, representing visible and to be seen.
EVERYDAY MONUMENTS celebrates the unsung heroes of society whose everyday labors or go unrecognized.
The artwork is placed on the highest floor of the building, facing the public with clear glass so that people can get a glimpse of the artwork from the outside. This signifies receiving recognition, acceptance and hence, is celebrated.

COMMUNITY & NATURE (outside elements)
are cutting into the interior space which divides
yet connects the workshop and the gallery.

The artwork PENUMBRA is hanged between two trees, forming a shaded gathering, in-between (indoor x outdoor) space that envelopes the community.
This indoor gathering space aims to cater any kinds of social support training, workshops, classes or recreational activities for the public which promotes community bonding.

Volunteers can get involved in the kitchen and cafe, teaching the public basic cookery skills and sharing communal meals. The vision of the communal cafe + kitchen is to create a sense of community at the art museum through the culture of cooking & eating together.

WORN SOLE
maps groups of people partaking a journey, transiting from places to another. The artwork is placed along a long walkway with a dark ambience to evoke the feeling of uncertainty and a sense of mystery.

In SPACE OF EMBARKMENT,
visitors have to go through the narrow walkway with a
series of descending steps that increase in length, translating the keywords 'transiting' and 'movement'. The slanted position of the wall leads a path and direction as
the walkway becomes more spacious towards the end
where the artwork gradually disperse.
In stark contrast, SPACE OF HOPE
is filled with light. Big openings and skylights help illuminate the artworks directly which signifies hope, faith and optimism.
The artworks are placed at a higher level where visitors ascend flights of stairs in order to reach the artworks ; signifying going against all hardships in search for a better life.
HIDE SERIES
is an installation of heavily deconstructed worn leather shoes stitched together to form hanging sheets of 'skin' suspended to the ceiling with shoe lace.
The gathering of leather - representation of the human skin embodies the gathering of strangers, celebrating the diversity of differences.
It's structure that exposes the surroundings through openings and voids, suggests 'opening up" and "revealing', where hide (skin) is no longer hidden.
The site is located in a slope area facing the main road and is surrounded by vast vegetation and lush greeneries.

Visitors are welcomed with a seating staircase cascading from a higher ground level that leads them to the basement courtyard.

POSTER DESIGN
In Singapore, immigrant workers play
an indisputable role in the country's
economic development as labour grew with the increased industralisation for the past decade.
By assimilating the artist's concepts into Singapore's context, the idea of
invisble communities implies the
immigrant labors within Singapore's society who exist without much notice.
Through her artworks, Jean Shin asks to acknowledge their presence and
contribution.

The first art work is CHANCE CITY ,
monumental and temporary structures made up of worthless
lottery tickets with no glue or supports. It represents labor, money and resilience - defying the odds of its fragile existence; which reverberates with palpable sense of optimism and HOPE.
Then WISHING WELL ,
welded kitchen sinks reimaginated as the public fountain; allows people to toss coins and make a wish. It is a reminder of the city's long history of immigrants pursuing a better life that represents perservernace, hardwork and most of all,
HOPE.
UNRAVELING
is an installation of sweaters unraveled and connected by yarns in a colourful web that reflects the dynamic social network a community.
The sense of gathering is heightened by the stacked wooden blocks surrounding the artwork, creating spaces where poepl could sit and gather around for small talks while viewing the artworks.
After leaving the exbition, visitors are to transit back to the ground level via a bridge on the second level and stairs; they can also visit the art workshop located at the side of the building.
